Born
in 1973, Sam H. Branson
has developed a painting
style that is rooted in
the scientific accuracy
of northern European
botanical studies and in
naif art. The fine
linear quality and
clarity of his work are
reminiscent of the 17th
century botanical
illustrations, in
particular the botanical
watercolors and
engravings of Maria
Sibylla Merian
(1647-1717).
Branson's keen sense
of observation permits
him to accurately render
the minute details that
visually define his
subjects. It is this
quest for precision and
accuracy, as well as
Branson's simplicity of
composition that also
ties his work with naif
art, particularly the
work of Henri Rousseau.
